WoolCool is a natural, sustainable and superior insulator made out of sheep’s wool. The WoolCool we use is 100% compostable and biodegradable. You can add it in your garden or compost as the Woolcool will release valuable nitrates back into the soil!
WoolCool is specifically designed for direct delivery of chilled and frozen foods such as meat, fish, cheese, fresh fruit and veg. It has been trialed and tested to keep produce within cool temperature ranges to ensure our deliveries always arrive in top condition for our Foodies.
The great part about our WoolCool insulation is that we can re-use it! These undergo a thorough process to ensure that they comply with food safety standards. When we receive them back, the plastic lining is removed before the wool is sterilised and a new food safety grade plastic lining is applied and sealed to ensure that it is suitable for re-use.
If you are located within our metro delivery areas, we'll collect the WoolCool and ice packs upon your next delivery date - all you need to do is leave them by your front door in time for your delivery!
At this stage we do not have a have a program in place with our Courier Partners in our Regional Centres to collect the WoolCool and ice packs. This is something we are working towards with our wider team!
The cardboard box - once flattened - can be left for your weekly/fortnightly kerbside recycling collection. We don’t collect the boxes for reuse, due to the inability to safely sanitise the product to meet our strict health and safety standards.
Our ice packs are one of the most important parts of making sure your food arrives in tip top shape! Food safety is super important to us so we've made a few changes to our ice packs to match up our food safety priorities with our sustainability goals.
All of our ice packs are now filled with 100% pure New Zealand water that can be poured down the sink, or used to water the garden, without doing any harm to our water supplies or plants. We previously collected the ice packs in our metro areas but we were unable to collect these nationwide. While we work towards an ideal solution we decided that NZ water was more sustainable than gel - and with this change, many of our customers are now able to drain the packs and place the plastic in their local soft-plastics recycling.
We're not all the way there yet, but we're glad to be able to reduce waste for our Metro and Regional Foodies alike.
Aside from being recycled, these ice packs are great to reuse for picnics, filling summer chilly bins, soothing aches and sprains - or even donating to your local sports club or food bank!
